Your bone density exam can tell you and your doctor if you are at risk for osteoporosis, and what treatment may be necessary or available to combat bone loss.
Am I at Risk?
Although anyone can have osteoporosis, there are certain things that can put you at a higher risk or developing osteoporosis.
- Being of Caucasian or Asian ancestry
- Having a small frame or low body weight
- Having a family history of osteoporosis
- Avoidance of dairy products
- Being a female
- Excessive caffeine intake
- Excessive alcohol intake
- Smoking
- Going through early menopause
- Having a sedentary lifestyle
Preparing for the test
DO NOT:
- Wear jeans or an under wire bra
- Take calcium tablets the day of the exam
Do:
- Wear loose fitting clothing without zippers
- This exam will take less than 10 minutes!
